About Devutthana Ekadashi

Devutthana Ekadashi, also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi, occurs during the Shukla Paksha of the Kartika month. This day marks the end of the four-month period of Chaturmas, during which Lord Vishnu is believed to awaken from His cosmic sleep (Yoga Nidra). The term 'Devutthana' literally means 'awakening of the Divine.' It is one of the most celebrated Ekadashis, as it signals the return of auspiciousness and the commencement of Hindu wedding season. The scriptural significance is found in the Skanda Purana and Kartika Mahatmya. It is believed that Lord Vishnu, after slaying the demon Shankhasura, rested for four months and woke up on this day. This Ekadashi is often celebrated with the symbolic marriage of Goddess Tulsi and Lord Shaligram (Tulsi Vivah), signifying the union of the soul with the Divine. Observing this fast is said to erase sins of many lifetimes and grant immense spiritual merit.
