About Shattila Ekadashi

Shattila Ekadashi occurs during the Krishna Paksha of the Magha month. The significance of this day revolves around 'Tila' (sesame seeds), which are used in six specific ways to gain spiritual and physical health. According to the Bhavishya Purana, Lord Krishna narrated the importance of this day to Sage Dalbhya, stating that sesame seeds have the power to erase sins and provide a shield against poverty and ill health. The legend tells of a wealthy woman who was extremely devoted and charitable but never donated food. To teach her the value of 'Anna-Daan' (food charity), Lord Vishnu visited her as a beggar. She gave him a ball of clay instead of food. After her death, she found everything in her celestial abode was made of clay. Upon praying to Lord Vishnu, she was advised to observe Shattila Ekadashi and donate sesame seeds. By doing so, her clay offerings transformed into gold and abundance, teaching that true charity must involve providing sustenance to others.
